Escape to Paradise: Kashmir's Star Hotel Awaits! - A Review That's Actually Real (and Slightly Chaotic)
Okay, so you're thinking of escaping to Kashmir. Smart move. And you're eyeing this "Escape to Paradise" hotel. Let me tell you, I’ve been there, and I’m here to give you the real scoop, not that perfectly airbrushed brochure version. Buckle up, because this review is gonna be a wild ride, just like my time in Kashmir!
(Disclaimer: I’m not a professional reviewer. I’m just a person who likes hotels, and a bit of a disaster when left to my own devices. Consider yourself warned.)
First Impressions (and the Agonizing Wait):
Right, so “Escape to Paradise.” The name definitely sets a high bar. Getting there was… well, let's just say Kashmiri roads test your patience, and the airport transfer they arranged was a bit late. (Airport transfer, folks! They do offer it, bless their hearts). But hey, I finally arrived! The exterior? Pretty darn impressive. Think grand, with a healthy dose of Kashmiri charm. The lobby was all marble and… well, let's just say it made my decidedly un-luxurious travel attire feel a tad out of place. (Check-in/out [express] is available, but I was too busy trying to locate my missing sock to actually use it!)
Accessibility, Because Let's Be Honest, It Matters:
Okay, important stuff. Accessibility: The hotel listed "Facilities for disabled guests", but I didn't deeply investigate this, since I got there on my own two feet. However, the elevators were there, and the lobby area seemed doable. So, if you have specific needs, it's always best to confirm details directly. Don't take my word for it!
Rooms – The Good, The Bad, and the Very Slightly Ugly (My Perspective):
My room! Ah, the room! Available in all rooms: Air conditioning (thank god!), Free Wi-Fi, Air Conditioning, Alarm Clock, Bathrobes (yes!), Coffee/tea maker (essential!), Free bottled water, Hair dryer, In-room safe box, Mini bar (tempting!), Seating area, Shower, Slippers… you get the idea. It’s well-equipped.
The bed? Gloriously comfortable, with extra long bed, which was a godsend, because I tend to sprawl. Blackout curtains were a game-changer after a long travel day, and I loved having a window that opens! Fresh air, people!
My Imperfect Experience: The first night, there was a small, very small, drip from the ceiling (thanks, old-building charm!) I called housekeeping, and they immediately fixed it. Impressive. Also, my complimentary tea was a bit…weak. But hey, nobody's perfect.
Amenities – So Much to Play With:
This place is loaded. Let's break it down, because I got truly lost in the options.
Relaxation Central: They've got the whole shebang. Spa, Sauna, Steamroom, Massage, Pool with view, Foot bath, Body scrub, Body wrap. I definitely hit the spa, and the massage was divine. I think I actually purred. The Pool with view was stunning – I spent hours just staring at the mountains. The gym/fitness center looked well-equipped, but, well, I was too busy enjoying the views. (Pool with view, Pool [outdoor] are available!)
Food, Glorious Food: Forget dieting. There are Restaurants galore! Buffet in restaurant, A la carte in restaurant, Asian breakfast, International cuisine in restaurant, Vegetarian restaurant, Western cuisine in restaurant, Coffee/tea in restaurant, Coffee shop, Desserts in restaurant, Happy hour, Poolside bar, Room service [24-hour], Salad in restaurant, Snack bar, Soup in restaurant, Vegetarian restaurant, Western breakfast. Their Asian cuisine was sensational. The breakfast buffet was an absolute feast, a total explosion of flavors and colors. (Breakfast in room is also available, Breakfast takeaway service in case I was going to a long day!)
My biggest weakness was the Desserts in restaurant! I'm a sucker for a sweet treat, and the pastries were to die for! Oh, and the coffee shop? Perfect for those caffeine-fueled moments of overthinking my travel plans.
For Those Who (God Help Them) Need to Work: Internet, Internet [LAN], Internet services, Wi-Fi in public areas, Business facilities, Meeting/banquet facilities, Xerox/fax in business center, Meeting stationery, Projector/LED display, Seminars. They've got you covered. I, thankfully, avoided all this. The Wi-Fi in all the rooms! was a godsend for posting my travel pics (and complaining about my weak tea).
Services and Conveniences: Concierge, Cash withdrawal, Currency exchange, Daily housekeeping, Doorman, Elevator, Ironing service, Laundry service, Luggage storage. Basically, everything you could possibly need is at your fingertips. I utilized the laundry service because I'm a messy traveler, and they did a great job. The concierge was super helpful with arranging… well, everything.
Safety and Security: CCTV in common areas, Security [24-hour], Smoke alarms, Fire extinguisher, Safety deposit boxes, Safe/security feature. I slept like a baby knowing I was safe, mostly because of the Blackout curtains, though.
Cleanliness and Safety during Covid:
They absolutely take this seriously, thank goodness! Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, Hand sanitizer, Physical distancing of at least 1 meter, Professional-grade sanitizing services, Room sanitization opt-out available, Rooms sanitized between stays, Safe dining setup, Sanitized kitchen and tableware items, Staff trained in safety protocol. This was a HUGE relief. I felt genuinely safe.
Things to Do (Besides Just Staring at the Mountains):
This is Kashmir, people! You're surrounded by beauty. The hotel itself is great for exploring!
Getting around: Not a problem. Airport transfer is available, and Car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site], Taxi service, Valet parking, Car power charging station.
For the Kids: Babysitting service, Family/child friendly, Kids facilities, Kids meal. I’m a big kid myself.
Things to do: (Well, Kashmir in general) This is your chance to see the Shrine, be there for the Indoor venue for special events, Outdoor venue for special events, Meetings, Seminars.
The Verdict - (My Slightly Overly Emotional Reaction) :
Look, "Escape to Paradise" is a really good hotel. It’s not perfect, but it feels real. The staff were lovely, mostly helpful, and genuinely seemed to care. The location is stunning. The food is fantastic. The amenities are on point. It's a solid bet.
Here's where I get a little gushy, because Kashmir is emotional: The view from the pool… the feeling of total relaxation after a massage… the sheer beauty of the place… it just got to me. I walked out feeling refreshed, like I'd actually escaped something. Maybe just the chaos of my own life.
The Quirks?
- The occasional construction noise. This is a working hotel, you can hear people at work.
- My weak tea. (I probably should have mentioned it).
- That feeling of wanting to get back immediately once you leave. Seriously.
Overall Score: 4.5 out of 5 Kashmiri Chillies. (It’s a thing, trust me.)

Jerusalem Old City Charm: Tiny but Mighty Apartment!
Okay, buckle up, buttercups! This isn't your sparkly Instagram itinerary. This is REAL life, Hotel Star of Kashmir, Srinagar, style. And trust me, it’s gonna be…something.
Project: Srinagar, Surviving Hotel Star of Kashmir (with my Sanity)
Day 1: Arrival & Initial Panic
- 6:00 AM (ish): Wake-up call at the crack of dawn. No, wait, that's my internal alarm blaring - the one that screams "YOU LEFT YOUR TOOTHBRUSH!" (I didn't, thankfully). Flight into Srinagar. The air smells…different. Clean-ish, with a hint of something I can't quite place (possibly woodsmoke, possibly intrigue).
- 7:30 AM: Land at Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport. Bags arrive… eventually. Thank God for the guy who helped us with it. I’m already sweating more than I should be; the altitude is doing weird things to me.
- 8:30 AM: Taxi to Hotel Star of Kashmir. Driver – a charming, elderly gentleman who, apparently, knew everyone and every goat within a 50km radius. Roadside stalls selling chai, the colors explode around me, and I feel a weird, burgeoning sense of joy. The drive is beautiful, like a painting, and… I feel so incredibly small in life, like a bug compared to the earth.
- 9:30 AM: Check-in at the hotel. "Cozy" doesn't quite cut it. It's more like "charmingly aged." The lobby? Well, let's say it hasn't seen a designer in a while. But the staff… they are so incredibly kind and warm. One guy, I swear, could read my mind. He knew I needed a coffee before I opened my mouth. Bless him.
- 10:00 AM: The room. Oh, the room. Let’s just say "character" abounds. The view, though, is spectacular: snow-capped mountains peeking over the rooftops. It’s a good view and the bed is the most important thing, so I'm grateful.
- 10:30 AM: Panic attack number one. Where's my phone charger? Is there Wi-Fi? How am I going to survive offline? Cue uncontrollable (yet brief) emotional freak-out. Deep breaths. Chai helps.
- 11:00 AM: Explore the hotel a bit. The rooftop is an adventure in itself. The views are stunning, and the air feels ridiculously clean after Delhi. Found a friendly stray cat up there, and for a brief moment, I considered becoming a crazy cat lady.
- 12:00 PM: Lunch at the hotel restaurant. The food…is…something else. Ordered the Rogan Josh. It's delicious, but spicy, with a flavor I can't explain. After the first bite, my eyes start watering, then, after the second, my nose… Then, I feel as though my entire face is on fire. But I keep eating. Because, you know, commitment.
- 1:30 PM: Napping. Crucial. This whole travel thing is exhausting.
- 3:00 PM: A leisurely stroll around the area surrounding the hotel. The walk is like a burst of color. The people, the markets, the flowers. Felt like an idiot smiling at everything, but I couldn't help it.
- 5:00 PM: Return to the hotel. Trying to use the Wi-Fi again, but I can't and get frustrated. The staff, seeing my struggle, patiently try to help. I realize that "patience" is going to be the mantra of this trip.
- 7:00 PM: Dinner at the hotel. Rogan Josh round two (I swear, the flavors are addictive… and horrifying.) Chat with a few other tourists – a couple from Germany who are obsessed with birdwatching, and another guy with an interesting tattoo who's been here for months.
- 8:30 PM: Back to the room. Write in my journal, planning for tomorrow, and, also, battling the urge to order pizza and binge-watch Netflix.
Day 2: Dal Lake & a Near-Disaster
- 8:00 AM: Wake up. Sun streaming through the window. The air feels fresh, though I'm unsure of how long it will last.
- 9:00 AM: Breakfast. Breakfast is a bit bland, and it makes me miss my usual breakfast.
- 10:00 AM: Shikara ride on Dal Lake. This is where things get REALLY interesting. The lake is gorgeous, like a shimmering jewel. The shikara wallah is chatty, and the sales pitches are intense. I resist buying everything, though I am tempted by the pashmina shawls.
- 11:00 AM: Houseboat visit. The houseboats are beautiful, but the sales pitch becomes overwhelming. The vendors are polite, but their determination is strong. They are like sharks and the only thing I'm interested in is water, and the lake.
- 12:00 PM: Lunch on the houseboat. Delicious food, served with grace. The view is stunning.
- 1:00 PM: Shikara ride back.
- 2:00 PM: Disaster averted. Near-disaster at the Hotel. I start to feel ill, and I run to the bathroom. The whole experience becomes a blur of fear and agony as my entire body starts to shake.
- 3:00 PM: Get a doctor. After getting over the embarrassment, I'm grateful for the doctor. It's not that bad, I think it might be something I ate. I try to sleep, but am too distracted by the events of the day.
- 4:00 PM: Decide to walk, even though the doctor told me to rest. Walk around the area surrounding the hotel. Then, sit and watch the sunset.
- 6:00 PM: Try food. Chicken soup to test. I'm going try to eat some again, but not too much.
- 7:00 PM: Back to room. Journal. Reflect. Contemplate the sheer randomness of life. Feel slightly better, but still terrified.
- 9:00 PM: Sleep. Or try.
Day 3: The Gardens & Finding Peace
- 9:00 AM: It’s a miracle, I survived! I’m alive. Breakfast at the hotel.
- 10:00 AM: Visit the Mughal Gardens. The Shalimar Bagh is breathtaking. The colors, the symmetry, the water features… it's like stepping into a fairytale.
- 11:00 AM: Walk up the Nishat Bagh. The view of Dal Lake from here is amazing - a visual feast.
- 12:00 PM: Lunch at the hotel. Order something mild, in the hopes of avoiding another incident.
- 1:00 PM: Wander aimlessly around the hotel. I find the staff is busy. The view is stunning.
- 3:00 PM: I find a quiet corner of the hotel and curl up with a book. Finally, a moment of peace. The mountains are always there, casting a silent judgment.
- 5:00 PM: Start to prepare to leave.
- 6:00 PM: Another terrible Rogan Josh for a final hurrah.
- 7:00 PM: Farewell to the staff. The staff give me snacks for the road.
- 8:00 PM: Taxi to the airport.
Final Thoughts:
Srinagar (and the Hotel Star of Kashmir) is a rollercoaster. It's chaotic, beautiful, exhausting, and utterly unforgettable. I'm pretty sure my stomach will never be the same, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. It's a reminder that even in the mess, there is beauty, and that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that don't go according to plan. Would I go back? Absolutely. But maybe I'll pack my own charger next time. And a whole supply of antacids. And maybe a therapist. (Just kidding… maybe.)
